Did you know that Allerton Garden –– located in Lawai Valley –– played a significant role in the filming of Jurassic Park (1993)?

Established in the 1930s, Allerton Garden is home to unique tropical plants and breathtaking landscapes. The garden’s iconic Morton Bay fig trees and serene water features provided the perfect backdrop for the adventure and wonder that Jurassic Park captured.

Originally developed as a commercial harbor in the 19th century, Nawiliwili Harbor is surrounded by lush mountains and offers breathtaking views, making it a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. The harbor is also significant for its role in Kauaʻi’s trade and transportation –– serving as a vital shipping hub since the 19th century, Nawiliwili has facilitated the import and export of goods, including sugar and other agricultural products.

Today, the Harbor is not only a bustling port, but it was also used as the backdrop featured in a popular 2011 film.

#KauaiFilmSpotlight: The Wind and the Reckoning

As part of our new series highlighting Kauaʻi-made films by Kauaʻi filmmakers, we're excited to throw it back to the award-winning 2022 film, “The Wind and the Reckoning”

Set in 1893, the narrative follows Ko’olau, a paniolo who –– after contracting leprosy –– flees with his family to Kalalau Valley on Kauaʻi to escape forced exile. Notably, much of the film's stunning visuals were enhanced with scenes shot on Kauaʻi, capturing the island's breathtaking landscapes.

#FilmLocationFeature: ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls

Standing at 151 feet tall, ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls is one of Kauaʻi’s most accessible and striking waterfalls. The falls cascade over a cliff into a pool below, creating a spectacular view framed by lush tropical foliage. The falls are fed by the Wailua River, which originates from the lush uplands of the island.
